I have two games against this alleged poser, and he appears to be world champion material, as he offered a draw before the fifteenth move. Perhaps he is the real thing! He thinks it is time for to resign, and has said so on more than one occasion. Although former World Champion Garry Kasparov is su...

ciao

I am leaving SlowChess. I am leaving with a record of 37-19-8 against opponents with an average rating over 2300. :D Thank you all for the memories. In my year here, only two players have displayed poor sportsmanship towards me. Sadly, one of those players is my only remaining opponent. I was ready ...

As far as ratings go you think my memory is serving another master and in the very next sentence you agree with me that the ratings were absurd---Sir, you sound like a Yahoo! And that was the point of my post. Why would any world class player want to play Yahoos like you or me? I believe you and I ...

Re: RE:Using Chess Engines

We are dealing with correspondence chess, right ?? [snip] In correspondence chess, would a player be allowed to test the soundness of his candidate move or moves, by analysing same with a chess engine - Yes In correspondence chess, would a player be allowed to discuss the current position with his ...

One last question---two people are playing chess. One is rated 2350 and the other is rated 1800. The one rated 2350 is using a fritz 5.32 and the 1800 player is using the Fritz 8. Their personal computers are comparable. Who wins? Just comparing the two engines, Fritz 5.32 can sometimes hold its ow...

Re: trust

Sir, Slow chess is Munchkin land, it's cyberville, it's lala land. In just the past year we've had bozos who had never won a game who had ratings approaching 3000 or more (if memory serves me correctly). Wow, ratings near 3000 with no wins!? Provisional or established? It seems that Greg was cleani...

I have lost one game that ended in checkmate, and consider it a blunder to have taken the game that far. In fact, I felt embarrassed.

When ratings are terribly inflated, the site generates scorn from some serious players. I'd prefer to see more of these players online here. When I invest a month or two in a game against someone with a rating above 2200, and then win because of a 1200 rating bullet-style error by my opponent . . . ...

The 50-move rule has gone through several changes, some recent, although a form of it dates to India 1000 years ago. According to the Oxford Companion to Chess (Hooper and Whyld), the rule of draw in fifty moves without a capture or pawn move was in force at the London 1883 tournament. Hooper and Wh...

chess in cinema

This week ChessBase news has directed its readers to two short chess films at Atom films. Both use chess as a vehicle for exploring male/female relationships.

I have noticed that the average game that I play here is against players rated higher than almost everone in my town--perhaps the inflation stems from the rating formula with respect to calculation of games against provisionally rated players. Although Tellymetwise makes a good point about inflated ...

There is no problem if you sleep less than eight hours; five would give you a thirty minute advantage!

You could also get up in the middle of the night to make your move.

I play here as I do other correspondence games. I keep track of the game elsewhere, study the position, and move when I am ready. Having noticed, however, that I was winning too often because my opponents were playing another way, I created a second account. With the other account I make 20-30 moves...

I need help with the Fritz 8.0 program?!

I use Fritz 8 almost daily. Most of the commands are similar to ChessBase 8, which often has better help files. The help files are available at chessbase.com, as well as built into the program.

What is your specific need? Email me if you like. jdstripes@dpcomputers.com

Slowchess.com!!!!!

Perhaps I should be more clear. I like the new name. As a matter of marketing, you must consider the target audience. Most players looking for quality chess at correspondence time controls, it seems to me, will find "slowchess" a clear descriptor of their object of pursuit. "Slowchess" may well conn...

Slowchess.com????

I like the new name--it is distinctive and says something about the site that I value. Correspondence chess without the correspondence. Leisurely time controls that facilitate quality chess. If you want speed chess, try the Internet Chess Club--I go there for one minute, five minute, and when I want...

LOGICAL CHESS, MOVE By MOVE

I read it in the mid-1970s. It certainly improved my chess then, and I suspect if I read it again now I could still benefit. As for books I would recommend--because they are helping me now--Jeremy Silman's series How the Reassess Your Chess and The Amateur's Mind . I immediately bought and started r...

The statistics offer a lot of interesting data--I was pleased to see that a few have accessed Net-Chess from my reviews of playing sites at http://www.angelfire.com/poetry/wulebgr/reviews.htm. But I was also disappointed there were not more who had done so.

Which chess rules govern play here? FIDE? USCF? ICCF? :?: I started playing here a couple of months ago without investigating how certain problems will be addressed--such as draw claims, and time-outs. While waiting for an opponent who hasn't moved since December 23, I started reading the forums. Th...
